“In circulation, in the future”: read an extract of the editorial by Miki Vialetto
Interviewing a variety of tattooists is important because it gives us the chance to reflect on present day tattooing, intended here as a sector first and foremost, before an art form. Tattooists, each with their own personality and work ethic, are people who create an image and reflect it in their behavior. So talking with them always gives us new stimuli, and important food for thought to consider together…
Mr. Cartoon: The legacy of a tattooist
At this point his style has become a brand that’s transversal to tattooing; it includes clothing, tattoo machines, and much more. Because Mr. Cartoon’s fine line black and grey – a bit prison style and a bit graffiti style, as he puts it – has been riding the crest of the wave for more than twenty years now. And from L.A. it’s spanned across the globe – just like his fame.
Anrijs Straume: Dark Trash Realism
Dark Trash Realism is the term Anrijs Straume uses to describe his style, because – as he tells us in this interview – he likes his work to have a dark atmosphere which seems “lived in” and dirty – trash – and that recalls the images of old black and white photographs. We met him in Liverpool, where we had a long chat about everything from veganism to the morality of being a tattooist.
Andres Inkman: The elegance of neo traditional
Andres is an amazing illustrator. In fact, his tattoos are similar to those old-fashioned illustrations from the 1930s, in which no detail is left to chance. Neo traditional is his alphabet, and his portraits of women, along with his sepia-coloured animal portraits, are must-haves. We’re in Barcelona, where we met him at Black Ship Tattoo, the shop where he works.
