Happy 90th Birthday Popeye!

It was on January 17, 1929 when Popeye first appeared in the Thimble Theater comic, a strip that had been published in the newspaper “The New York Evening Journal”, since 1919.

Popeye‘s first line in the strip, upon being asked if he was a sailor, was “‘Ja think I’m a cowboy?“.

He was created by the american cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar.

Over the years Popeye has also appeared in comic books, television cartoons, arcade and video games, hundreds of advertisements (from spinach to candy cigarettes) and the 1980 live-action film directed by Robert Altman and starring Robin Williams.

Popeye’s theme song, titled “I’m Popeye The Sailor Man“, composed by Sammy Lerner in 1933 for Fleischer’s first Popeye the Sailor cartoon, has become forever associated with the sailor.
