Chris Green: Journey for perfection

When you look at the top artists work, you may be under the illusion of artist satisfaction – especially if their style has a uniqueness breaking the mould. After meeting the Neo traditional artist Chris Green, my view of contentment in art has been warped by his simple statement – ‘I still feel like I’m trying to find my own style’.

I’ve been an admirer of Chris’ work for some time with his fusion of classical art nouveau and Neo traditional style, he allows us to explore, ‘what if Alphonse Mucha had a tattoo machine?’

Having seen his work from afar, my interpretation of his confidence and that he was content in his style was way wrong. Chris recently told me on the ‘Tattoo Dogz Podcast’, “As much as it might look like I have it, (his style), I still don’t feel like I do”. On the subject of what vision of his work he said he’s learning on the returning customers, seeing the healed work and adapting . Chris’ distinctive style is applauded by some of the greatest artists and knowing he is still on his quest to find his artistic calling is refreshing , we can only be excited for the future and for the progression of tattooing.

Artists should take the message, one of our generations flawless artists is still in the search for perfection. In Chris’ case a humble work ethic has also a contrast of respecting the tattoo medium too by saying, ‘If it looks too smooth I like to rough it up a bit so it looks like a tattoo’. So with all art being subjective to everyone the definition of perfection will only be in eye of the artist and for the best tattooist maybe a journey for perfection will never end.
