On the evening of February 28th, 2019 a crowd of art lovers and tattoo enthusiasts gathered at the Next Door Gallery in Geneva, Switzerland to attend the opening of the exhibition “Backpieces” by Filip Leu.
The atmosphere was full of excitement as people milled around the gallery and viewed the 32 original new works displayed on the wall. These are impressive 70 x 100 cm life-size drawings of body suits, done in charcoal and red pencil on acid-free paper.
For this occasion, his first one-man show, Filip chose to let his imagination develop the theme of skulls as his main subject matter.
Skulls are a traditional and widely popular subject in tattooing. They are a sometimes frightening but nevertheless fascinating representation of our mortality. They are also a way of accepting our temporary time on this earth and a reminder to enjoy our daily lives to the fullest.
In keeping with the quality he is famous for in all his large body tattoos, Filip aimed in these works to make the designs enhance the shape of the body.
The gallery also offered a full catalogue and prints of some of the pieces.
