Marie-Andrée Baril: Tattoo Life calendar girl June 2019

Model and tattoo artist in the Quebec area (“My style is somewhere between Neo-trad and Cartoon”), we met this gorgeous brunette girl and asked her about a lot of things…

Do you feel comfortable posing for our calendar using your nude look? I have seen your modelling portfolio and nude look isn’t isn’t so frequent over your career…
Yes I do. But I’m not used to doing a total nude shoot. I only shoot implied nudity. Nude shoot are nice for heavily tattooed girls because they show all the tattoos but I prefer shooting a concept with nice lingerie. Or a custom-made outfit like Lory Sun does. She’s an amazing artist!

You are a model and a tattoo artist working at your private studio in Victoriaville (Quebec). How would you describe your style? You do a lot of Black&Grey New Traditional sleeves, don’t you?
Yes, I really love doing Black&Grey stuff. I think my style is between Neo-trad and Cartoon. I do colour stuff too but yes, I prefer Black‘n’Grey projects. I had been used to drawing in that particular style for some years and before becoming a tattoo artist I was a realistic portraits artist. I usually use wood case pencil (aka graphite pencil) for my portraits.

You are very persevering. I have read your biography and I learned that you tried for six long years to get in touch with tattoo publishers…
I mean, I’ve been doing modelling for 6-7 years now but yes, it took time before I was published. It’s important to work with photographers who are already in contact with the tattoo magazines industry. My first magazine spread was located in Los Angeles. I contacted them and they got back to me. I went to LA and did a shoot with Justice Howard. I went there with my cousin Roxanne and my sister Mélissa: a truly awesome trip!

And what happened then?
I did several trips in the USA – Los Angeles, Boston, New York – to collaborate with photographers like Hugo V, Boss Lady, Alvarado, Christian Saint, Victor Rodriguez and the list goes on!

There is ink all over your body so why a funny racoon on your left leg? Is it a Canadian thing?
Not really, but the racoon is probably my favourite animal. They are beautiful critters. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved racoons. I remember when I was 3-4 years old, my mom at night woke me up to show me a family of racoons on our porch and they were so cute! Since then I love them. When I was a baby my bedroom was covered with racoon wallpaper, maybe it influenced me! (laughs) I have one racoon tattoo on my left leg and one on my right hip.

Do you have a particular tattoo subject you are particularly fond of?
Mostly my tattoos represent my family, my children and my childhood.

Who are your favourite tattoo artists?
I love so many tattoo artists, it will be too long to list them all, but the ones who worked on me are: Olivier Julliand at “Glamort Tattoo” in Montreal (colour cartoon stuff). My cousin Roxanne Baril-Marcotte that has a private studio in Saint-Apolinaire. Kwun by “Tattoo Mania” in Montreal (Lettering). Vincent Bizzaroide at “Glamort Tattoo” in Montreal. Jeff Palumbo, a Belgian tattooer. Nathalie Duquette at “Studio Nephtys Tattoo” in Sherbrooke (Realistic Black and Grey) and a few others…

Will you visit Europe for some tattoo conventions or guest spots on this side of the Atlantic?
I would love to travel more in Europe. Not as guest or as a tattoo artist in convention but rather as a simple visitor to tattoo conventions. I like to visit tattoo parlours while travelling and maybe get a small tattoo. Also I would love to shoot with some photographers in Europe like Billy “Bilacous” Scott in England.

Last question: do you feel sexy and sensual on the Tattoo Life June shooting?
Of course I do! (laughs) Like I said before, I’m not used to shooting like this but the result is stunning. Christian Saint is one of my favourite photographers, by the way. A very talented, professional and kind person. He knows how to make you feel comfortable and it’s so easy to collaborate with him!
