For the moment nothing is known about the name of the director or the release date of the Sony blockbuster, not even whether Tom Hardy will be back as Eddie Brock…
Let’s get some things clear right from the start.
A likely date had been mentioned – 2nd October 2020 – but now it seems everything has ground to a halt once more on “Venom 2”, the follow-up to last year’s “Venom”, produced by Sony Pictures which – to everyone’s surprise – managed to bring in the astronomical sum of 856 million dollars at the box office.
There is still some doubt about the name of the director, even though there has been talk of Andy Serkis (the British actor who went down in history for the part of Gollum in the trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”), and he seems the most likely choice on a list of names that also includes Travis Knight (who directed “Bumblebee”) and Rupert Wyatt (“Captive State”).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, shooting should start on “Venom 2” next autumn, but producer Amy Pascal (who was behind “Spider-Man: Far From Home”) has bluntly declared that they are taking their time and no release date has yet been decided: “2nd October 2020? There’s no timetable,” said Pascal.
Triggering panic in thousands of fans but implying that there may have been problems during the writing of the screenplay by Kelly Marcel which – rumour has it – is not quite to the liking of star Tom Hardy, alias Venom/Eddie Brock.
But mysteries apart, nearly 900 million dollars at the box office is an excellent starting point for making a sequel and so the new film can probably count on the participation of Hardy together with Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson (villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage).
Meanwhile, Andy Serkis has flown to Los Angeles (the source of this news is the website HeatVision) to come to an agreement with the Sony bosses and find out whether “Venom 2” will go into production or the character will be hijacked by the MCU, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the form of a collective movie.
For the moment we can’t tell you any more than that and so we hope you will enjoy the distraction of our gallery of tattoos dedicated to the spin-off from the Spider Man saga – the lethal but irrestible Venom!
